so i got new tires on my truck yesterday, and paid $751 for them.

i've known for a while now that my tires were pretty much at the end of their life. i've had the same tires on my truck since i got it from my dad, senior year of high school. so that's.... four and a half years? and i must admit that i didn't take the greatest care of them in that time. anyway, i was planning on biting the bullet and getting new tires sometime in this coming week, but marshy made the decision for me - i got a flat yesterday morning, doing 65mph in the middle of the highway. yeesh.

i've experienced a flat tire before - driving the family van on vacation, nail in the road - so i knew exactly what was going on and i swung straight across three lanes of traffic to the right-hand shoulder and put my flashers on. i have a spare tire latched onto the underbelly of my truck bed, but a short inventory revealed that i do not, in fact, have either a jack or a tire iron in my truck. lovely.

so i'm in the middle of calling my insurance company when this guy knocks on my window and says he'll tow me off the highway for free. turns out the city has cameras every 1/8th mile along the highway and tow trucks that they'll dispatch to any vehicle stranded on the highway itself. if you get off the highway, you're on your own, apparently, and if you're blocking a moving lane of traffic they'll fine you $140 before towing you. thankfully neither of those applied to me, so i got a free tow to the discount tire that was one exit down the highway. very nice gentleman, too.

and then i bought tires. turns out the cheapest model tire i can get for my truck, new, is $99 per tire, and that's the really crappy model. i got one of the high-end models, but the price difference between what i got and a decent-quality model of middling price was about $14 per tire. the ones i got were about $160 per tire, and then i had to pay to get the old ones taken off and the new ones put on, and some other stuff besides - don't ask, it makes me sick just to think about it.

so that was yesterday. and it's not like i should complain, because i didn't spend any more money than i would have done this coming weekend when i was going to purposefully set out to get tires, but watching that much money disappear from the bank account is a little... depressing. definitely didn't get any work done like i'd planned to, after that.
