amarillo by morning.....

ah, the hill country is amazing....

i finally went out to melissa's house today to get my studio projects from her. she lives over in the hill country east of georgetown (i keep spelling that with an a. why???) and her backyard slopes right down to the lake. that area is awesome!!! it reminds me why i love austin so much. we ended up talking for over an hour in her kitchen. both of us are heading back to uh tomorrow, so we'll probably see each other again in less than 24 hours, but in houston. so weird to think about that. but we reminisced about austin and why we love it, and how different it is from houston. and we're both feeling kind of the same about going back: this year will hopefully be better than last year now that we've got our feet wet and sort of know the ropes in college, and i want to see jim and all my friends again, and move into the dorms- because it's fun there, new environment, much more independence, etc- but i'm not really anxious to start classes and i'm gonna miss the homey environment of austin. the two cities are so different, and having grown up here i just feel weird in houston. austin feels more alive somehow. maybe i'm sounding crazy, but melissa agrees with me!

and i have house envy. she lives out on those acre lots that they have in the hill country area, like the ones off sam bass road and 1431- i saw deer in people's yards in her neighborhood, it's that kind of place. and of course all the houses are big and low to the ground, all sprawled in the shade on the hilltops with long driveways and veneers of texas white limestone. it's nice and quiet out there, too. mmm....

well, i'm getting steadily closer to being completely packed, and it's really exciting. at the moment i'm hungry, so there's pot pies in the oven, too. it's just been a really good day. later i may go with caitlin to see 'stardust', that neil gaiman movie. we'll see if i have time. and bri called today- from chinatown in san fransisco. she saw the winchester house yesterday, and alcatraz!!!! she's having a blast, obviously- good for her!

i just feel really happy at the moment. life is looking up.
