wedding plans!!!!! omg i'm so excited. this is all i've been able to think about all day. and, y'know, some of this stuff i've already thought about and i'm just finalizing ideas, but some of it.... wow, this is so awesome.
okay, first things first: the proposal. this is how it happened:
monday (october 13) was my 2-year anniversary of dating jim. (sort of. that's a different, long story. ^___^) last year we went to skyline, this amazing- and expensive!- restaurant at the top of the hilton hotel in downtown houston. so this year we had dinner at home, just kind of semi-formal special. jim cooked fettuccine alfredo and lamb chop, and we had pancakes for dessert- delicious!!!! pancakes are probably my favorite meal. anyway, dessert was on glass plates, and i noticed almost right away that there was a piece of paper or something on the bottom of my plate, but i didn't think anything of it. i was focused on talking to jim, y'know? *eyeroll* so i eat the first pancake, and i'm kinda full, but jim is adament- i MUST eat all the pancakes. so i'm like, "okay...." and i figure, he cooked pancakes for dessert for me, so i'll eat them. but by the end of the second pancake i'm getting really full, so i start pulling apart the third pancake. by this point, bear in mind, jim is sweating bullets and there are whole letters visible on the paper underneath my plate. i am oblivious. ^____^ so finally i notice that there is something written on the paper underneath my plate. so i move the rest of the pancake out of the way- and there's a card underneath my plate asking "will you marry me?"... and my eyes get huge, and jim gets down on one knee, and he asks me to marry him.
and then i tackled him and squeed and kissed him and didn't even pay attention to the wonderful, beautiful ring he bought me until like five minutes later.
so that's what happened.
anyway, wedding plans:
i've always wanted to have a fall/winter wedding- i love cold weather and snow and winter and everything that comes with it, and october is my favorite month. BUT october would be a really bad month for me to get married- rehearsal on friday, wedding on saturday, honeymoon on sunday, and class on monday. and as an archi i can't afford to miss a week of school, even for my own wedding. a day or two, yes- i'm skipping two days to go to nz's wedding on oct 3 next year, actually. but no more than that. so october is out. i'm thinking december/january would be a good time to do it- so, 14 months from now.
the thing is, we get out of school about a week before christmas, and i want at least a few days to settle down from school and work out last-minute details before the wedding. so that puts us at post-christmas. BUT: 24th is xmas eve, 25th is xmas day, 26th is my mom's bday, 27th is jim's parents' anniversary, and 28th is mimi's bday (jim's grandma). so..... new years eve wedding, anyone? ^___^ that's only tentative, but... the thought process is there.
and i've pretty much decided that i want to have two receptions. our wedding guests are gonna be 40 people MAXIMUM, including the wedding party (bridesmaids, etc). so i want to be able to have a big reception that i invite everyone to, right after the wedding. the problem is that jim's family and all our friends are in texas/the southern usa, but MY family all lives in wisconsin/illinois (nz, you're the exception). so: two receptions.
that gets expensive.
so i need ideas about how to make that work. it wouldn't be so bad to do an outdoor reception here in texas, cause even on new years eve it probably won't be colder than like 40f outside. but in wisconsin a week later... it's gonna be freezing. literally. ideas, anyone?
and i have all these floating random thoughts about flowers and dresses and what i want the church to look like and what the ceremony will be like and... too much to think about in one day. but that's the basic thought process so far.
today's been such an emotional roller-coaster for me, though. i got so many congratulations from friends- everyone in my studio has known for weeks!!!!!- and hugs and people admiring my ring (it's beautiful), and i felt so popular and happy and excited.... but i'm struggling a lot in studio right now, too. so i would be working on drawings and getting really depressed... and then i'd see my ring on my finger and in two seconds flat i'd be grinning and happy again. i feel like i'm pregnant!!!! *rofl*
so. EXCITED.

Date: 2008-10-15 04:42 pm (UTC)AHHHH!! SO CUTE!!!!!!! Jim gets hundreds of cuteness points. Go him.
Still no pictures lady. *nudge nudge* I'm going to check your facebook.
I feel so bad about making you miss school. *GUILTFACE* I hope it doesn't ruin your life. *crawls into hole* If it makes you feel any better, we probably won't honeymoon until way later (we want to go to Europe).
I am always the exception. :P
We had some friends get married on Dec 30th. It works out so you can claim to be married for 2009's taxes. :D Holla!
Two receptions is a pretty good idea, actually. I dunno. What about your grandparent's church or something? Maybe at their house even if it's just family.
I wish you weren't so busy so I could call you and squee and plot and stuff. And I have SHIT TONS of bridal mags. Seriously. I can mail them to you.

Date: 2008-10-15 11:57 pm (UTC)hey, i didn't even think about the taxes thing! ^___^ but my friends were pointing out what an awesome new years eve party a wedding reception would make. ne? *smirks*
PLZ YES GOD send me those bridal mags. i need all the material i can get. if you're done with them, that is. i'm just starting out, but i have an advantage: jim is a hotel/restaurant management major. 2/3 of his female friends are wedding/event planners. =D it was my mom who gave me the idea of having two receptions, actually. and we could even do one in a park or some other place like that. but it couldn't be the second one: it'll be january. in illinois. so they'll have like four feet of snow on the ground at that point. X__X
you know what? we're planning our weddings. THIS IS SO EXCITING. ^___^

Date: 2008-10-16 03:16 am (UTC)It really is expensive. We just want to go all over. Eurorail. For two weeks or so- there's way too much to see!! We'll save up for... a long time. *wilts*
LOL.
I SHALL! Where do you want me to send them? Some of them have coupons for free issues and stuff in them.
If it's just family it could totally be at someone's church or something.
I KNOWZ!! 8D

yeah, i completely forgot that i'm in a new apartment now. *facepalm*
as far as staying in europe: if you want to go the cheap route, then instead of staying in hotels, investigate the youth hostels. they're all over europe. it might not be the best thing to do for a honeymoon.... but if you go later on, it's definitely worth looking into.

Date: 2008-10-19 02:12 pm (UTC)Is it an apartment or a dorm?
I think we may do that in some places.
