okay this is just messed up:

"The national average daily demand [for water] is 160 gallons per capita per day." - Planning and Urban Design Standards

granted, that factors in all the daily water use in the country - residential, industrial, watering lawns, agricultural ("Agricultural irrigation represents approximately 40 percent of the total water demand nationwide."), everything - and divides by the total number of people in the country. but still. that is a shit-ton of water.

It is a lot. Guess at its breakdown daily: a/30 gal for bathing or showering and the washing of hands, b/8 toilet flushes at 2 gal. per, that's 46 already.

besides hygiene, we use water for cooking and cleaning as well. and it's hard to say whether any of that is a truly unnecessary use...

the worst part is that all of the water we use is potable - very few places recycle gray-water or utilise rainwater harvesting. that's a huge expense, to sanitize all this water that's going right back into the ground or someone's toilet.
