It's grim to see them, and to hear them. I try to end their lives swiftly, but yes, I never do get used to it.
One exterminator said to use steel wool to block their holes, temporarily. Then the carpenters can put permanent blocks in. I used tin can lids, nailed over the holes, as a permanent stop.
