myurbandream: (sanzo's happiness)

Make a note for future reference: I am never ever getting a flu shot ever again.

I've never had a flu shot before (to my knowledge) nor have I ever had the flu, and I've been quite happy to maintain that trend. But my doctor insisted that I get one ASAP - she would have done it herself at my last visit, except they were out - so finally on Tuesday evening I went to a clinic and got the shot. The pharmacist kept me at the clinic for ten minutes or so, for observation, to make sure I didn't have an immediate adverse reaction, and after that she let me go home. I felt mostly normal - I'd had a sore throat since that morning, but I didn't seem to feel any changes after getting the flu shot, except for a bit of soreness where they'd stuck the needle into the muscle of my arm. I thought, 'Well that wasn't so bad.'

Wednesday morning I woke up to go to work and my body laughed at me. 'Work?' said my body. 'Driving? Girl, you aren't leaving the house. You'll be lucky to get out of bed today.'

And indeed it was so. I was up for about half an hour while Jim was getting ready for work that morning, but by "up" here I mean that I meandered very slowly and dizzily about the apartment, managed to sip on a glass of water, texted my supervisor to tell her I'd be in late to work, and was otherwise basically worthless as a human being. Then I went back to bed until about 9am, whereupon I got up, called my boss, ate some toast, and actually left the house. Yes, that's right, I put on clothes, locked the front door, and made my slow way over to the office to check the mailbox and the laundry card. When I got back inside, I collapsed with exhaustion onto the couch, where I curled up under a blanket and read - distractedly - for a couple hours, munching slowly on an apple, until I fell asleep at about noon.

I woke up at 4pm and decided enough was enough. I was going to go outside and my body could just stuff it. I called up my sis-in-law, and we got her little dog and we went for a walk. We even made it all the way around the corner of our street before I got too tired to go on - a whole five hundred feet or so! The weather was lovely, and I enjoyed the sunshine and got very warm, and I worked up an appetite for the first time all day. So my sis, angel that she is, took me to get a smoothie for dinner, just a short drive from our neighborhood.

And then we were waiting at the counter for our smoothies and my body was like, 'HaHA! Revenge is sweet!' And I threw up in the trashcan by the register.

Awesome.

So after that we sat around until my stomach had been pacified by delicious frozen liquid fruit, and then we went home, and I went back to the couch and slept some more, and then Jim got home from work at about 10pm and I got up, brushed my teeth, and moved to the bed, where I went back to sleep.

Thursday morning I dragged my protesting corpse out of bed and into the car and off to work, where my boss's bosses both told me to go home already, you look terrible, why are you here? But I persevered! And I was even mildly productive, too.

Lesson learned? I fucking think so.
