oh, man.... so, i'm definitely in studio right now, and griffin will totally kill me if he comes out of the classroom and sees me on the computer, but i have to write this down before i forget it. christo got us talking about childhood and cartoons and having kids of our own and stuff, and we started trying to think up all the good old cartoons we watched when we were kids, before they got all crappy and violent and stuff. and we need to dload them all so our kids can watch those instead of the cartoons that'll be on tv when they grow up.

the short answer is: "yep, he's toast". but i can go into more detail about that, if you like....

first of all, i want to clarify: the doctor's on his tenth body, which means he has three left. twelve regenerations means thirteen lives, cause he cheats death twelve times, and the thirteenth shot he dies for real.

but there's a very important fact that you're either missing or are unaware of: regenerations are kind of like hearts/lives in a video game. actually there's this hysterical comic with theta and koschei where they....nevermind. the doctor can 'reload' on regenerations any old time. (or well, he could, but now he can't; but i'll get into that in a minute.) romana, who was the president of gallifrey back during- what, 6doc?- romana actually had the luxury of saying 'you know what, i'm tired of being blonde. i wanna regenerate into a brunette!' and she'd do it, because as president she has unlimited access to regenerations. actually on gallifrey they have some measure of control over the form their regeneration takes- it's more of a makeover and less of a life-saving measure, usually. and the master, who was imprisoned on gallifrey by 8doc before the time war, was basically resurrected in a sense- they needed him during the time war, so they gave him a new set of regenerations and a tardis and sent him to the front lines... only he slipped that noose and survived the time war as a human. yay!!!

so. it may seem like the doctor can just go on forever with new regenerations. BUT now that gallifrey has been destroyed in the time war, he can't go back to his home planet and get a new set of 'lives'. so basically, they have 10doc-13doc to come up with a new canon method of getting more regenerations for the doctor, or he's toast.

First of all, I throw on the Altar of Obscure Fandon Knowledge this, as payment for my question.

Second, I have absolutely no knowledge of DW beyond "save a tardis, ride a time lord!", but the logic of "only-12-rengerations" still makes sense to me. So, yes, you answered my question in that I already understood that 12 regenerations=13 doctors and I get the fact that regens can be replenished, except DW totally can't, at this point, do so. I also now understand that they're going to have to get creative if they want to take the series past 13doc.
