"If we're on Doctor #10, and Time Lords can only regenerate 12 times, what happens after regeneration #12? Does the series just end?"

Took that directly from my friend Laura's journal. ANSWER IT, WOMAN!!

the short answer is: "yep, he's toast". but i can go into more detail about that, if you like....

first of all, i want to clarify: the doctor's on his tenth body, which means he has three left. twelve regenerations means thirteen lives, cause he cheats death twelve times, and the thirteenth shot he dies for real.

but there's a very important fact that you're either missing or are unaware of: regenerations are kind of like hearts/lives in a video game. actually there's this hysterical comic with theta and koschei where they....nevermind. the doctor can 'reload' on regenerations any old time. (or well, he could, but now he can't; but i'll get into that in a minute.) romana, who was the president of gallifrey back during- what, 6doc?- romana actually had the luxury of saying 'you know what, i'm tired of being blonde. i wanna regenerate into a brunette!' and she'd do it, because as president she has unlimited access to regenerations. actually on gallifrey they have some measure of control over the form their regeneration takes- it's more of a makeover and less of a life-saving measure, usually. and the master, who was imprisoned on gallifrey by 8doc before the time war, was basically resurrected in a sense- they needed him during the time war, so they gave him a new set of regenerations and a tardis and sent him to the front lines... only he slipped that noose and survived the time war as a human. yay!!!

so. it may seem like the doctor can just go on forever with new regenerations. BUT now that gallifrey has been destroyed in the time war, he can't go back to his home planet and get a new set of 'lives'. so basically, they have 10doc-13doc to come up with a new canon method of getting more regenerations for the doctor, or he's toast.

does that answer your question? ^/________^

First of all, I throw on the Altar of Obscure Fandon Knowledge this, as payment for my question.

Second, I have absolutely no knowledge of DW beyond "save a tardis, ride a time lord!", but the logic of "only-12-rengerations" still makes sense to me. So, yes, you answered my question in that I already understood that 12 regenerations=13 doctors and I get the fact that regens can be replenished, except DW totally can't, at this point, do so. I also now understand that they're going to have to get creative if they want to take the series past 13doc.

Thanks Jenny!

and what's funny is that you consider all of these quality television while i was only allowed to watch 4? of them.

and what the hell is wrong with modern disney movies?! esp. the animated ones!

and "crappy, violent and stuff"? i would beg to differ. (and i watch a lot more cartoons these days than you do!) i mean come on, what is so crappy and violent about A:TLA? Teen Titans? Danny Phantom? (ok some people might say that one's pretty crappy, but i would say it's no worse than johnny quest.)

alright, i'm talking about older cartoons geared towards six to twelve year olds. most of a:tla would go right over a six-year-old's head; doesn't mean it's not awesome. but it DOES have way more violence and adult issues and stuff than sesame street or the jetsons.

also, i love a lot of the movies disney is currently putting out, but you have to admit that most disney sequels fall short of their predecessor's coolness. it's just a disney sequel thing. i love the classics: bambi, snow white, alice in wonderland, etc.

the things i don't like are shows like... like 'ed, edd, and eddy', where most of the show is about kids being stupid and cruel to each other: i don't find that funny, and i don't want my kids to think it's funny to embarrass other people. 'two stupid dogs' and 'animaniacs' both border on that, but they're also classics of my childhood, so i felt it necessary to put them on the list. i probably won't dload them, but: classics.

and i'm sorry that you've never most of these shows. really, truly sorry, because i have so many quotes and random thoughts that spring from watching them as a kid. but, hey! you're making up for it now! ^/___^

concede on a:tla. however, while it may go over the heads of 6 yr olds, ages 9-12 (half you demographic) would understand. (and Bill Nye wouldn't go over the heads of 6 year olds?) and i refuse to believe that avatar is more violent than batman, superman, x-men, power rangers, TMNT, transformers...

most sequels in general fall far short of the original, not just disney. out of curiosity, which sequels are you think of? cuz off the top of my head, i can't think of any animates sequels that have come out recently. all i think of are Cars, Finding Nemo, Meet the Robinsons, Ratatouille and the like. and i abhor snow white (except for dopey... and grumpy)and haven't seen bambi or alice in wonderland in 15 years and really don't miss them.

idk. honestly, no shows "where most of the show is about kids being stupid and cruel to each other" come to mind - not even ed, edd, and eddy (although a lot of it is stupid). but i guess i don't really care about those either and just block them out. or maybe i just have a different tolerance level than you.

and don't be sorry. i recognize most of the titles and really have no regrets about missing 75% of them.
and with the recent additions to the list i can add 2 to the list that i watched. and another show i miss is Beakman's Basement (sp?).

Ed, Edd, and Eddy is NOT a disney production- it's a cartoon cartoon from Cartoon Network, just like Dexter's Lab and the Power Puff girls. It's a dumb show, for sure, but there ARE a few jem episodes. I'm not really sure if that was an issue in the post, but whatev, yeah?

i, too, love cartoons, and in fact had this same conversation with Anne yesterday. We were thinking more along toddler lines though, Fraggle Rock, Puzzle Place, David the Gnome. Stuff like that. We missed some of the old school bumps for Nickelodeon too, like FACE. *sigh*

DANNY PHANTOM RULES!!!!

... okay, the fandom does, in anycase. There was a lot of potential in the series for it to appeal to a slightly older audience, but they didn't take it in that direction. So, they lost a lot of great ideas.

but they managed to get that with avatar (a:tla), at least! the first few episodes were definitely geared towards a pre-teen/young teen audience, but they've been upping the ante now that they've realized that older teens (like me!) are watching it. *grins* and i'd totally forgotten about dexter's lab and powerpuff girls!!!! *flails*

i loved all those shows!!!!! dude, they were amazing!!!!!!!! i have to agree that the cartoons/shows nowadays aren't as good as they were - most of cartoon network has gone stupid (anime or anime-ish stuff aside ex. Avatar, Teen Titans, Inuyasha, etc.) and i really, really miss disney classics. emperor's new grove is well done and funny, but in my opinion it doesn't compare with the beauty of the classics, the art that i considered disney. now they've become just movies, albeit good ones (except for the stupid sequels to the classics; those need to burn and die).

Ooh, another great show (one of the few that melissa and i can actually agree was good from our childhood) was gargoyles. if you're lucky you maaaaay be able to find it once in a while. it was one of my favorite shows, along with just about everything on your list and tiny toons!

i totally own gargoyles tapes!!!! i loved that show as a kid- thanks for the reminder! (actually, bri got into a huge gargoyles kick about three months ago and convinced caitlin to find and download the entire series for her. *eyeroll* trust me, it's possible to find it, you'll just have much better luck online than at a garage sale or a video store. *facepalm*

Dude...I spent a few days last week watching MORE eps that Cait got me because time ws killed and I hadn't gotten to yet.
I'm making a crossover between Gargoyles and Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles.
IT WORKS! Like woah, it works!
Mutants that fight good, mystical creatures that fight good, they all live in New York (only some in sewers and some on skyscrapers), both groups have met with interesting things such as magic and tech, and they both have resident-genius characters that would get along like a house on fire!!!!
