SUCCESS!!!!! so now i know i can post an lj entry from a desktop computer, using the new entry editor. i just have to figure out how to make it work on my ipad...
hmm... it seems that when i'm updating my lj from ym ipad, i don't have to futz with the data-heavy icon images list, i just have the classic text list format, whereas here on the desktop i have to wait a couple seconds for all my icons to load in the pull-down menu. i do have to agree with the crowd, the icon pull-down menu was a lot cleaner (and smaller, and quicker to load) when it was just text. i know what all my icons are called, i don't need to look at them when i'm picking one.
this version of the journal updater page on the whole seems much... bigger. it's spread out, less compact. for me, compact is good, because i spend a lot of my internet time on my ipad, where the screen is comparatively small and scrolling around with my fingers is something i want to do as little as possible. i could fit almost all of the old entry page on my ipad screen without scrolling anything except the text box.
i do like that this version separates out the different categories; mood/music/location are different than the tags/content/comments/screening settings, so i like that they're in two different groups. but could those two groups be a bit more compact? they don't have to take up quite so much space, do they? i think the mood/music/location boxes could go at the top with the subject bar.

also, i can't figure out how to work my mood theme now. used to be, i could select one of my mood icons and then type in a custom description for it. now... i don't even know.
